    Beta Reading Guidelines etc Feedback

Right now the beta reading section is mostly underused, and has no guidelines/rules, which has unfortunately led to a lot of members who've registered, posted in that section asking for a beta reader, and then never returned to the forum. We want to avoid this happening as much as we can in the future, so we want to discuss potential rules/guidelines and would appreciate any suggestions you may have!

Some things we're already discussing implementing are:

    • Having those who are looking for an alpha/beta reader post the first chapter of whatever they need read in the library so that any potential long-term alpha/beta readers can read a sample of it. This would either be one chapter or 1-3 chapters.
    • Making it so that there's a minimum amount of posts you have to make throughout the rest of the forum before being able to utilize the beta reader section. This would be so that we don't have members who join, post asking/offering to be a alpha/beta reader, and then never return to the forum.
    • Limiting whether Newbies can read stories in the library, too, if members feel that makes more of a buffer between their work and just anyone reading it. To read it you have to participate in the community and earn your Member promotion first.

What rules/guidelines would you like to see for the beta reader section, going forward? What do you think of the ones listed above (particularly the third one)?

Please reply to this post with any/all suggestions you may have, even if they seem like ones that we'd already be including. I'd like to be able to get a draft written soon so that by January (aka next week) they can officially be implemented and hopefully we can encourage more members to use the beta reader section from now on.

Sounds good, especially the first two. Small detail: Since chapter length is arbitrary and up to the author, I'd prefer a word or page count over a chapter count.

I'm neutral about the third one, personally, I don't mind if a newly registered member can view the stuff I put in the library. I don't post stuff there that I'm uncomfortable sharing with people I barely know anyway, but I don't mind implementing this restriction if others feel more comfortable that way. On the other hand (I think I've said this in the other thread kherezae made), reviewing stories in the library is a valid way to earn member status, and people need to be able to access these stories in order to do so.

Yeah, I think word count over page count definitely makes sense!

Yeah, I'm with you on being neutral about it, too. As long as the public (like, non-registered guests) cannot see it, I'm cool with whatever. No one has stated that they'd feel more comfortable with making it so that you have to have X amount of posts before a new member can view anything in the library, so until that happens, I think we can leave it the way it is. And yes, I agree about reviewing stories being a valid way to earn member status! It's a tough thing to balance out. We want to encourage people to join and participate but not make people feel forced to give a review. But on the other hand...one of the biggest things about this community is the fact that it's meant for feedback. If no one is willing to take the time to give feedback, that's not really helpful to anyone. (I know there are definitely several people who are willing to do so! But there are also those who are a little more...shy about it. XD)

Word count - Maybe 5000 words or three chapters, whatever comes first?

I like having newbies having a post requirement before using the beta read section.

Newbies reading the library... I think I'd be more comfortable with only full members reading, cut down on the chance of theft maybe? Not that that is a HUGE concern. But the more barriers the better for me.

Is status change from newbie to full member automatic? Or manual. If it was automatic we could have an 'initiate' roll with a 5 post requirement, and once they hit that they can access the library. And at 10/15/whatever posts, they can post in the beta read section. But if its manual then forget it, too much work 🙂

I think it's automatic, yes. @kherezae would know better than me if what you're suggesting is possible.
