The Fenian Galaxy

Recommended Posts

I have been building the Fenian Galaxy for the past 30 years.  It's grown a lot since those early days and with each novel I write, I add more to it.  I have written my own guidebook to it and I also recently started a Blogger account https://virianchronicler.blogspot.co.uk/ which will contain much of the material from the guidebook, along with some extras which I plan to add in the future.

In the Fenian Galaxy, there are three main types of adepts.  Roughly 20 percent of the population have natural crystal bonds, meaning that they are born with fragments of certain powerful crystals bonded into their DNA sequence.  Some crystal bonds are rarer than others but they all give enhanced abilities.  The type of abilities depends on the type of crystal.  I won't go in to details here, but you can ask me for more information if you're interested.

Some people have crystal bonds artificially implanted.  There is a cult of sorcerers known as the Vyrdigaan Order, who specialise in this process.  It is best done to babies and young children, but in exceptional circumstances, it can be done on adolescents and even in very rare cases, on adults.  This method is considered blasphemous on one of my worlds and frowned upon in several other communities.

There are also those known as Aureants, who have limited powers of sorcery without a crystal bond.

Powers can also be achieved by means of blood sorcery, but this method is considered to be unethical almost everywhere.

Everyone (regardless of whether they have other powers) has the potential to be able to fly.  This skill has to be learned, rather like learning to swim, ride a bicycle, etc.  Some communities actively encourage their children to learn at an early age, while in other places, it is considered to be evil or unnatural.  When learning to fly, one has to make their cloak of darkness.  This is not an actual garment, but an extension of their body. It has the appearance of a fine silk cloak which grows from the base of the neck and along the shoulders, hanging down the back.  For most people, the cloak only works during the hours of darkness, hence the name.  It has to be constructed from faith and a positive memory.  It has to be summoned for flying and banished when not required.

The Fenian Galaxy has varying levels of technology, but basically the wealthier sectors of society on most worlds have powered vehicles, computers, cellphones and most other modern conveniences.  The poorer people have to do without these luxuries, of course.

Broadly speaking, it's urban fantasy, but with various other elements mixed in.  Some of the novels are purer fantasy than the others.  Three of them combine prison and courtroom dramas with urban fantasy, and one of those also has a classic epic fantasy quest involved.  Two others also have elements of sci-fi and eugenics mixed in.  Several of them feature mafia-style gangster families.  I also have feuding Scottish-style clans and Bedouin/Tuareg-style desert tribes.

I'm also working on two which highlight abusive parents and another which deals with a woman trying to succeed within male-dominated society.

I keep it real by including real-world issues, such as poverty, racial and sexual prejudice, LGBT issues, mental and physical disabilities, corrupt leaders, devious politicians, troubled teens and of course, classic style villains with evil laughs!

This is great! :D Is any of this published?

Yes, I have published seven novels, known collectively as the Virian Chronicles.  I'm in process of writing the Virian Companions, which are either prequels dealing with back-stories of important characters, or sequels featuring characters introduced in the main seven Chronicles.  Also in progress are the Vyrdigaan Prophecies, prequels relating to important prophecies.

I'm not sure what this site's policy is relating to advertising so I shall leave you to make your own web searches if you're sufficiently interested.  Thanks for taking an interest, I appreciate it very much.

Well, I didn't want to overstep the group's boundaries.  Being a newbie isn't really a let-off.  I guess I should ask one of the admins or study the FAQs and rules in detail.  Anyway, thanks again for taking an interest.
